Fueled by compassion and empathy, we focus on quality of life for our cows. That means going beyond keeping cows comfortable, healthy and safe, and meeting organic standards of care. We’re piloting projects to make our cows’ everyday lives better.
Our cows spend 120 days or more outside grazing every year. And just like us, they choose shady spots when it’s hot out. We’re investing in shade research and projects, figuring out how to create sun shades that can be moved, how much shady area is needed for each cow, and more.
Cows *love* giving themselves a brush. We’re rolling out a program to give brushes to all our farmer partners, with the long-term goal of a brush in every cow barn.

We’re piloting a program to help socialize calves by housing them in small groups in hutches. This positive socialization impacts them long-term as they navigate herd life on the farm.
Our update to the recent animal welfare issue
The care and welfare of cows is a critical part of our company and brand values. We have taken recent allegations seriously and moved quickly to take the appropriate actions. Upon learning of the issue on November 16th, we immediately suspended all sourcing of milk from this farm for our brand, pending a full investigation.
Since then, four different investigations have been conducted on the farm, with support from the farm. Three of the four investigations have been led by independent third-party experts, and the fourth by Horizon. These investigations identified key areas for remediation. We have worked with urgency, together with a new farm management and oversight team, to agree and implement immediate and specific actions to improve the care of the animals. These remedial actions have been verified, on farm, by our team. With these improvements, we are reinstating milk sourcing, on a 12-month probationary basis. This probation period includes both ongoing mandatory independent and Horizon farm audits.
We expect all of our suppliers to always uphold our high standards of animal welfare and quality, and Horizon is committed to ensuring these standards are maintained.
Good cow care begins at birth. That’s why we invest in cozy jackets to keep calves warm and snug. We’ve given out over 600 jackets to farms.
