Apple Cake

A spin on the traditional American apple pie treat that really highlights a delicious apple flavor, with a hint of cinnamon.

  • 1/2 cup Horizon Organic unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup lowfat buttermilk
  • 2 -1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups raw apple, grated
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar - topping
  • 1/4 cup white sugar - topping
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon - topping


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Butter or coat 9x13-inch pan with cooking spray.
  3. Cream butter, shortening and sugars until light and fluffy. Add buttermilk.
  4. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.
  5. Combine wet and dry mixtures until just combined. Fold in apples.
  6. Spread batter in prepared pan.
  7. Mix together topping ingredients and sprinkle on top.
  8. Bake 40-50 minutes or until knife inserted comes out clean.
